Top Tips for LinkedIN Etiquette

You are here: Home / Uncategorized / Top Tips for LinkedIN Etiquette

August 2, 2020 By Kendall Leave a Comment

LinkedIN is a major source for today’s employers in scouting talent. Due to the importance, we want to ensure that the candidates working with On Cue Hire have access to tips and tricks in making a standout LinkedIN profile.

  1. Professional Headshot

Our best tips: wear professional clothing, take the photo in a well-lit room against a white wall, with a focus on your face (smiling). This setting makes for the best headshot!

  1. Add a Summary

Adding a summary to your LinkedIN profile is a great way to add buzzwords and information to draw in recruiters and hiring managers. Be sure to summarize exactly what you love to do in your career and what you’re working toward in your future.

  1. Recommendations

This is a GREAT thing! Ask your professional network to take a few minutes of their time to write you a LinkedIN recommendation. The more recommendations you have, the more your profile will stand out to future employers.

  1. Ensure your resume and LinkedIN profile match

Please make sure your timelines and titles match what your LinkedIN profile says. Any discrepancy here can lead to Recruiters and Hiring Managers questioning the validity of your resume.

  1. UPDATE your LinkedIN with the most recent employment!

So often we find that LinkedIN pages are not updated with most recent employers and information. If you are an active (or even a passive) job seeker, it’s critical that all of your information is updated on LinkedIN. Your future employer is looking at your page, make sure it displays your full experience.

  1. Be mindful of your commentary – likes and comments

The posts that you “like” and comment on will appear as public on your profile under your “Activity” section. That section is near the top of your profile, so anyone and everyone (future employers, etc.) can see this information. Please keep it professional. Kudos to former coworkers, “likes” on exciting articles that you see, are acceptable here. Avoid political commentary and negativity/complaining.

  1. Create a unique URL

Toward the far right of your profile, there is a pencil icon. When you click that icon and scroll down to the bottom, there is a section called “Contact Info”. Click the pencil next to that section and at the top of the page, you’ll see a “Profile URL” section at the top of the page. Add a unique URL here with your name instead of the auto-generated numbers that LinkedIN uses. This will make your profile easier to share.

Now that you’re all updated and your profile looks amazing…add your LinkedIN profile as a link on your resume!

We hope this information is helpful and we wish you all the best in your job search.
