In these unsettling times of the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be worrisome to know whether it is a good time to be searching for a new career. We are writing to assure you that many companies are indeed still hiring. Below are some words of advice we can provide about job searching in today’s market:
Update your Resume
Make sure your resume is updated with ample information about your skills, previous positions, and education. Our recommendation is to keep your entire resume down to 1-3 pages…beyond that, it is hard to keep the reader’s attention. Take a look at each bullet point and make sure it’s worded cleanly and concisely. Spell and grammar check your resume. Add a skills section at the top and/or an accomplishments section, really be sure to show off what you are capable of on your resume. This is your time to boast.
Update your LinkedIn page
LinkedIn is a widely used tool among companies and recruiters today. It is important to have your LinkedIn updated with a professional photo along with each of your positions updated to match your resume. In the summary section, add a bio with key words about special skills you have (example: Advanced Excel User). Update your title on LinkedIN as well to reflect your most recent role. Finally, it is highly beneficial to reach out to previous coworkers and supervisors to ask for recommendations.
Create a Skype ID and Download Zoom
Be webcam ready! Many companies at this time are hosting webcam style interviews rather than onsite interviews. Be sure to have a professional Skype ID and download Zoom on your personal laptop or desktop computer, as many companies are using these technologies today.
Create a Professional Email Address
If you don’t already have one, now is the time to create it.
Consider the Type of Position you want to Target
Ask yourself, does my resume reflect my experience in this career? Is there anything I can add to build upon my resume in this area?
We hope this helps. Please stay well during this time!
